What is an IP rating?

The IP rating on an electrical product is a measure of how much water and dust ingress the product is protected against.

IP stands for Ingress Protection. The first number in the IP rating represents the level of dust protection, and the second number represents the level of water protection. Combined these tell you how well protected your product is. From  IP00 with absolutely no protection, to IP68 which provides maximum water and dust protection.  The IP rating of a product is an important consideration when choosing a battery charger or inverter. For example if your installation is on a boat or other marine application, its important to use products which have an IP68 rating to ensure safety and longevity of your power system.
