Ultimate Portable Power Set Up
PORTABLE POWER SYSTEMS: Your dual-battery system doesn’t have to be tied to just the one vehicle, if you set it up right.
WORDS BY MICHAEL TYRRELL
I speak to lots of 4WDers who tell me they don’t want to go to the expense of a dedicated dual-battery system for a number of reasons. Whether you’re dreaming of that once in a lifetime Cape York adventure, preparing for your yearly Fraser Island camping trip with mates or just want to kick back at that perfect local campsite, it’s actually incredibly easy to setup a versatile portable 12v system that isn’t tied to your 4WD!
WHY A PORTABLE 12V SYSTEM?
- Easily swapped between vehicles if you have more than one 4WD in the family
- Great for 4WDs that double as work or family vehicles where space may be an issue
- Easily removed and re-fitted to a new 4WD if you’re upgrading soon
- Share the setup costs between mates or family and share your 12v system!
- No costly custom, vehicle-specific 12v wiring installations required
ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE TO SEPARATE BATTERIES
One of the biggest expenses in a dedicated 12v system is the batteries – including how to mount them securely. Most battery trays are vehicle specific, which limits where you can use your battery. That’s where the Baintech PowerTop V3 comes into play. This cracking all-in-one power system features a 100Ah gel battery to power your fridge, in its own ultra-tough battery box that can be mounted just about anywhere – even the back seat. It can even be moved between vehicles in seconds! It has multiple input and output sockets so you can power a huge variety of electronic gear, from fridges, to inverters, lights, phones, tablets and more. It’s also incredibly safe, with a digital voltage display, a low-voltage alarm that lets you know when the battery drops below 11V and a 20A resettable circuit breaker.
EASY BATTERY CHARGING THREE WAYS
If you don’t want to fit a dedicated battery charger to your vehicle, then you’ll need some other way to keep your battery topped up. The PowerTop V3 can charge its in-built battery in one of three ways – by plugging into your 12v cigarette socket while you’re driving, by plugging into mains power at home or via optional solar input.
EASILY ADD SOLAR FOR A COMPLETE STANDALONE SYSTEM!
To make your portable power system completely standalone, just add solar power to it. The PowerTop V3 works perfectly with either the BainTuff Solar Blankets or Solar Panels when you connect a solar regulator like the clever Victron PWM Pro-Charge Controller. With a setup like this, you could run your fridge for as long as you get sunny days, without ever having to start your 4WD. Plus, you’ve got the added benefit of knowing that you’re powering your campsite in an environmentally-friendly way, harnessing the clean, green power of the sun!
