On Board DC-DC Charging vs. In-built DC-DC Charging

If you want to maximise every inch of space in your 4WD build, then the Baintech 110Ah with 20A in-built DC DC charger is the solution for you. Two 110 Ah lead acid batteries can weigh in at as much as 65kg, the equivalent of one person! Weighing in at 11kg and just 50mm thick, the Baintech Slimline battery will save you weight and space.

Now with an in-built 20A DC DC Charger, your install requires less parts, less wiring, and your battery becomes completely portable. The Baintech Slimline lithium battery has dual input charging, so it accepts charge from both a smart and traditional alternator (Blue Anderson) and an external (regulated) solar charge (Grey Anderson) for fast and efficient charging. The grey connector can be used as input and output for charging and running loads.

The DC batteries are built using the latest generation prismatic lithium iron phosphate cells and Australian designed Battery Management System (BMS).


Having the in-built DC DC charger for your battery means you can take it anywhere. If you sell your rig, or simply want your fridge set-up closer to your campsite. The versatile Anderson plug off the battery means you can use a parallel cable adapter to run dual 12v accessories at the same time.


This battery fits spaces in your 4WD, Camper Trailer, or Van, where no other lithium battery will. Measuring 50mm thick Size (L x D x H) 635 x 265 x 50mm – you won’t find a more versatile battery.

Easy Installation

With two Anderson plugs, this battery installation will take half the time of a traditional DC DC Charger install and setup.

Double your capacity

The Slimline battery provides up to 100A of continuous discharge or charge and can be stacked in parallel to increase amp hour storage capacity. Charge and discharge via the grey Anderson plug and charge from a DC source via the blue Anderson plug.

What about solar?

All you need is a regulated solar source with a Grey Anderson plug, and you’re good to go. The grey Anderson connector (In/Out) accepts solar to charge the battery.

Cheap Lithium, is it worth the risk?

With such disparity of pricing in the market, where should you invest your money? As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Here are a few things to take note of when considering lithium.


Not all lithium batteries use the same technology or are constructed in the same way. The Baintech Batteries are constructed using the latest lithium iron phosphate cells. These prismatic cells are the highest quality in a metal hard case. Cheaper versions will use plastic casing that offers less protection, and Cylindrical cells to build their batteries.

Prismatic vs. Cylindrical

Spot welded small Cylindrical battery cells, with little to no protection are cheaper to produce, and lead to a cheaper lithium battery. The many multiple Cylindrical cells meshed together leaves more possibility of short circuit and inconsistency.

Prismatic cells on the other hand are far superior, they are designed in hard case prismatic cells, offering protection, and an overall better design.

Low quality BMS

A high-quality battery management system (BMS) is crucial to protect your battery from overcharge, and undercharge. Ultimately, the BMS protects your investment. So invest in quality.

Why does a quality BMS matter?

Your battery comes with a Battery Management System (BMS) mounted internally.

The BMS is an electronic solid-state circuit board which manages the cells and protects the battery across a range of scenarios which primarily includes over charge and over discharge protection. Unlike lead acid batteries, over charging or over discharging a lithium battery may lead to a hazardous scenario. Therefore, the BMS is the heart and soul of a lithium battery.

The Slimline battery BMS is a highly reliable solid-state device which is primarily designed to keep the cells safe and the overall pack from being damaged by excessive voltage or excessive discharge event.

Why Lithium?

One of the advantages of lithium batteries over lead-acid batteries is longevity. If you want to realise the long life potential out of your lithium battery then consideration must be given to depth of discharge.

A battery lifespan is rated by the number of cycles before the original capacity has reduced by a certain amount; a cycle is defined as discharging from fully charged, to a percentage Depth of Discharge (DOD), and then charging back to full again. So, DOD describes what percentage of the battery capacity is being used each time.

Note: DOD is different to State of Charge (SOC, also known as Charge Level); in fact, they add together to 100%. So, 80% DOD equates to 20% SOC.

The less DOD you use each cycle, the longer the battery will last.

This fact should be considered when choosing the battery Amp hour capacity. You will have a higher return on battery investment if there is enough capacity at hand such that you are not heavily discharging the battery on every cycle. Extra capacity ensures lower DOD, extended life and a higher financial return on your investment.

    Hi Bainbridge. I am interested in your slimline battery system. I currently have two 100 amp AGM batteries, which are hugely heavy, in parallel to run my fridge in the back of the ute plus supply camp and other power requirements on the road. They are charged by a 120 amp solar panel on the roof of the vehicle and a DC DC charger which comes off the Ford Ranger year 2020 model. If I disconnect the the DC DC charger and run it through the blue Anderson on the Slimline can I then use an Anderson double adaptor to provide a parallel lead to a second Slimline and input the the solar charge? If so, to which Anderson connector do I connect the parallel lead and which do I sue to deliver power back to my power distribution board?
