Sizing a Battery Charger for your Battery!
Although others may recommend that your charger be 10-20% of the house battery capacity. Not all batteries are the same and generalizing is not always suitable. BT suggests consulting battery manufacturers specifications sheets for exact charging parameters. Examples given are two similar products, but they require very different charging regimes, therefore different size and type of battery chargers are necessary to optimize the performance & longevity of these batteries.

Leisure Fest at Sandown Race Course was the first real introduction of the Victron range of products to the public in Victoria. The most popular were the Multi’s Combination Inverter Charger units working to run various products.
The 4WD & Fishing Show had good responses from the customers who looked and bought Sinergex products located all around the shows.

into their houseboats for the last 2 months. Using their laptop they can configure the unit to run with their 5kva genset. The feature Peter has told me that the customer can load up the Onan genset and the inverter will automatically turn on without overloading the generator. E’Tec is installing other Multi’s in the boat club. Using Victron units has made us confident in selling units, which we know will work the first time every time. ‘Flying Inverters’
I was recently called in for assistance with an unusual inverter installed by one of my dealers. The requirements were for an inverter to supply approximately 5.0 Kva, from a 24volt supply, to run a VERY Expensive arc lamp & control system on board an aircraft! No Problem! The Phoenix Inverter’s continuous power rating & its robust yet compact construction & un-questioned reliability would be more than up to the task. So, two of the 24volt 3000volt/amps units were chosen to run in parallel, giving 6Kva continuous & 12Kva peak power. An aircraft you say? Exactly what sort of aircraft? A short drive to Bankstown airport revealed a Soviet Mil Mi-8MTV Helicopter Gunship! Complete with Russian aircrew. This day was becoming more than interesting.
The installation was performed quickly thanks to the Victron units’ compact size & lightweight. Power was supplied from one of the auxiliary alternators (only 1000Amps @ 24Volts!) via two sealed lead acid batteries & Bainbridge Mega Fuses. The batteries were important as aircraft power, although DC, usually has lots of 400Hz ripple, the small (100A/H) batteries would ‘buffer’ this ripple out. Testing the installation required starting the two Isotor 2200 horsepower turbines. This in itself received quite a bit of local attention. It’s not everyday that a Soviet gunship cruises around a general aviation airport.
Loading up the inverters with operating current of 5.2Kva revealed all was well. I was privileged to be invited to the film set for the ‘shoot’. Picture this… the Megalong Valley, west of Sydney, in the Blue Mountains, at 1.30am & its minus 6°C.
The Victron units performed their tasks flawlessly, unlike me, somewhat unprepared for the cold.
